Adobe has contributed source code for the ActionScript™ Virtual Machine, the powerful standards-based scripting language engine in Adobe® Flash® Player, to the Mozilla Foundation. Mozilla will host a new open source project, called Tamarin, to accelerate the development of this standards-based approach for creating rich and engaging Web applications.

While, I’m skeptical that this news will have any significant widespread effect, I do think this is fabulous news. With the recent advances in both significant browser players (IE7 and Firefox2) could we expect to see a ripple effect to IE as well?

If so, we could see some significant performance gains to ECMAScript for the browser (read: JavaScript).

Thanks Adobe!
