This is hardly news anymore but I’m in the process of cleaning out my draft entries and this was next on the list.
A little history as I see it. The popular South Park Studios airs an episode titled “Trapped in the Closet”. As in nearly every other episode, the writers take aim at yet another religion – Scientology. And one of the big jokes in this episode is that “Tom won’t come out of the closet”. Yes, Tom Cruise.
I saw the episode when it first aired – watched it with some friends. Hilarious! They topped it off with a challenge “I’m not scared of you. Sue me!” at the end. In case you didn’t know, that’s a common response from Scientology whenever their core is being threatened or taunted. Silly isn’t it? Largely known as a religion with a membership of millionaires and billionaires, they are also known to sue. Now that’s something to be proud of.
So not so long ago we hear that this specific episode has been pulled and the chef has quit. (Right, I forgot to tell you that the Isaac Hayes – the chef – is a scientologist). How and why? There is some speculation here:
Internet bloggers accused Cruise of threatening to not promote Mission Impossible 3, a surefire summer blockbuster, if the offending episode ran. Comedy Central is owned by Viacom, as is Paramount, which is putting out MI:3.
You be the judge…
